1. Why teach yoga in schools?
I am hearing from teachers that pressures to raise student test scores has increased stress in the classroom. Yoga is a perfect tool for reducing stress and helping our students to focus.
2. Why do you train school teachers to use yoga in the classroom rather than have a qualified yoga instructor teach a yoga class?
Easy two- to five-minute exercises can be used before a test for focus and alertness, calming students down after recess, and transitioning from different subjects, all without any special clothing or equipment.
3. As a school teacher I have to restrain my students in classes, can yoga help?
A teacher shared with me that regular use of yoga in her classroom eliminated the need to restrain students in classes where restraining students previously took place on a daily basis.
4. What are yoga tools?
Yoga tools are breathing and movement exercises regularly taught in yoga classes that can be used throughout a school day to assist students in concentrating, focusing, relaxing, unwinding, and calming.
5. I thought I had to do an hour and a half of yoga a day in order to get benefits?
Yoga can optimally be practiced for 20 minutes a day, or, do what you need for your body.
6. I get bored doing yoga, what do you recommend?
Breathe. That may sound silly but tuning in to your breathing and becoming focused on yourself may not be familiar to you and may be labeled as “boredom” when it is actually being relaxed and at peace.
7. Will yoga help me sleep better?
I have students say to me that the only night they sleep soundly are the nights they take yoga class.
8. Don’t I have to buy special clothes and props?
Yoga can be done seated or standing wearing every day clothes and requiring no special equipment.
9. Isn't yoga a religion?
No, yoga is non-denominational.
10. Can I use yoga to recover from an injury or an operation?
Yes, yoga is even used in physical therapy. Depending on your individual needs yoga can be used successfully to recover the body.
11. What if my muscles are really tight, can I increase my stretch and flexibility?
Yes, I use a gentle and unique style for increasing flexibility that does not involve straining.
12. Do I have to meditate or Ohm in class?
No, classes are devoted to warming up the body and moving. There is a short period of class time where you will rest or practice breathing techniques.
